Description
This selection contains letters written by Helen Calder Robertson to her family during her time attending Bryn Mawr College (circa 1913-1916). In these letters, Helen Calder Robertson writes about her day-to-day life at the College. She describes professors, her coursework, and guest lectures she attends, as well as gives details about student government, her participation in the Christian Association, and college traditions. She writes about both watching and participating in athletics and plays and about her time spent with friends. These letters provide a personal, detailed view of student life at Bryn Mawr during the early twentieth century. Among the topics frequently described are academic lectures and talks on religion and philosophy. Robertson also describes several lectures on women's suffrage, and while she praises the speakers, she expresses some uncertainty about suffrage that was unusual among her classmates. The collection also offers especially valuable insight into the Christian Association, which was among the most popular student groups on campus for many years. It should be noted that in many cases pages and/or paragraphs not pertaining to Bryn Mawr directly were removed before the letters were donated. The bulk of the letters are fragments, many undated and/or unsigned. However, it is possible to date many of the fragments by the content (events, etc.), in which case the date is penciled in, in brackets.
